About

reading-boy+dog

I’m Ben Nicholson and Cape Guy has been my alter-ego since 2014 as I (slowly) make indie games alongside the AAA ones I develop in my ‘real’ job!

Cape Guy has so far released 80 Days on PC and Mac and Ski Three. A third game, Re-Entry, is currently in development…

Prior to starting Cape Guy I did some things:

  • Worked on This is Football at Sony’s London Studio (RIP). I worked on a few things while there but the highlight was developing the goal-net physics which was my introduction to game physics development. I also worked on PlayStation Home and their prototyping team.
  • Being the physics programer at Rocksteady Studios for Batman:Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City where I got to develop Batman’s cape as well as as all the other fun physics (rope, hair, fluid, explosions etc.)
  • Worked at Frontier Developments leading the team who developed the destruction physics used in ScreamRide and led development of parts of the engine technology used in all of Frontier’s games, including Elite:Dangerous.

Since starting Cape Guy I’ve also done some other things:

  • Developed the 3D spatial query library used by Paint3D at Microsoft Lift London.
  • Worked on Games Intelligence team at Microsoft Research in Cambridge on reinforcement learning (RL) based Game AI.
  • Worked back at Frontier Developments on their technology team.
  • I currently work at Two Point Studios. The highlight (so far) has been implementing the fish behaviour for the Aquariums in Two Point Museum.
